San Juans Surfers Paradise Riding The Waves In La Union

If you're an avid surfer, then you know that the Philippines is one of the best destinations for surfing. One of the lesser-known surfing spots in the country is La Union, where you can find some great waves and a laid-back atmosphere. That's why I decided to take a trip to La Union in January 2013 for some surfing and relaxation.

Demographics and Culture

La Union is a province located in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines. It's primarily known for its surfing and beach resorts. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and you'll find that many of them speak English. The province is also home to a number of indigenous tribes, such as the Ilocano and Pangasinense peoples. You may have a chance to experience some of their traditional customs during your visit.

Tourist Destinations

Aside from surfing, La Union has some other tourist attractions that you might want to check out. One popular spot is the Pindangan Ruins, which is located in San Fernando City. The ruins were once a Spanish church that was destroyed during the 1896 Philippine Revolution. Another must-see destination is the Tangadan Falls, which is about 45 minutes away from San Juan. The falls are surrounded by a dense forest and are a great place to take a dip and enjoy the scenery.

Shopping and Culinary

La Union is a great place to buy souvenirs and other locally made products. You'll find a number of shops and markets in San Fernando City and San Juan. One unique product that you should try is Ilocano vinegar, which is made from sugarcane and is a staple in local cuisine. You may also want to try some of the seafood dishes, such as grilled squid and fish, which are popular in the area.

Tips

If you're planning to visit La Union for surfing, the best time to go is from October to April. During this time, the waves are at their best and the weather is generally good. San Juan is the main surfing spot in the province and you'll find a number of surf schools and rental shops in the area. If you're a beginner, it's recommended that you take some lessons before hitting the waves on your own. And don't forget to bring sunscreen and a rash guard to protect your skin from the sun and the rough surfboard.

Overall, I had a great time in La Union and would definitely recommend it to any surfer or beachgoer looking for a less crowded spot to enjoy the waves and the local culture. With its friendly locals, beautiful scenery, and unique shopping and culinary experiences, La Union is definitely worth a visit.
