Aydin

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Aydin, Turkey thanks to the Erasmus program. It was an eye-opening and beautiful experience that I will never forget.

A beautiful view of Aydin, Turkey

Aydin is a city in western Turkey that is rich in both history and culture. With a population of over 1 million people, it is the 17th largest city in the country. One thing that stood out to me immediately was the warm and welcoming nature of the people. They were eager to share their culture with me and the other Erasmus students.

Demographics and Culture

The majority of the population of Aydin are Turkish, but there is also a significant Kurdish population. The city is known for its vibrant cultural scene, with music, dance, and art playing a major role in daily life. Turkish traditions such as the dervish dance and the whirling dance are still practiced today and are a must-see for visitors.

The city is also home to numerous museums and historical sites, such as the Aydin Archaeology Museum and the Cihannuma Mosque. These sites offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the city's rich history and culture.

Tourist Destinations

One of the must-see tourist destinations in Aydin is the Aphrodisias archaeological site. The site dates back to the 3rd century BCE and is home to some of the most well-preserved Roman ruins in Turkey. It was once a bustling city with a population of over 15,000 people and was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite.

Another popular tourist destination is the Aydin Mountains, which offer breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. Visitors can hike or bike along the numerous trails, or simply relax and take in the scenery. The mountains are also home to numerous traditional villages, where visitors can experience a more rural way of life.

Shopping and Culinary

No visit to Aydin would be complete without sampling some of the local cuisine. Turkish food is known for its rich flavors and use of fresh ingredients. One of the most famous dishes in the region is İzmir köfte, a type of meatball that is traditionally made with lamb, beef, or a combination of the two. Another popular dish is Lahmacun, a type of Turkish pizza that is topped with minced meat, vegetables, and spices.

The city is also home to numerous markets, where visitors can find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The Aydin Bazaar is one of the most popular markets in the city and is a great place to haggle for souvenirs.

In conclusion, my experience in Aydin, Turkey was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The city is rich in both culture and history, and the people are some of the warmest and most welcoming that I have ever met. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to visit Aydin to do so, you won't be disappointed.
